Ironically, as soon as the much tooted system of Total Quality Management was proclaimed to be deceased the Lean Six Sigma training jumps forward with the exclamation "The King is Dead, Long Live the King!".
But it should be realized that without taking the utmost care of concentration on competency development the Lean Six Sigma Training system is under the very high risk of following the untimely demise of the Total Quality Management method.
In order to make the above-mentioned notion easier to understand just consider the following illustrative situation that we will use as a graphical example. Just imagine that I am a salesman selling motor mechanic's toolkits. As an experienced salesman I have received special training and I have had enough hands-on practical experience in selling motor mechanic's toolkits to various people all over the country and demonstrating the whole range of functional capabilities of the tools included in the kit. As the next step just imagine that I have found enough time to spend two weeks with you and instruct you how to use the complete range of tools in the kit in question. I have explained to you the purposes of a torque wrench, of ring spanners or even a reaming tool. As a tradesman I am completely positive that I can manage as far as this. After the two weeks of practical instruction you can get some basic knowledge of how to adjust the tension bolts and nuts correctly without damaging the delicate thread and without getting your skin off your knuckles in the process. You will be able to find your way correctly among the heads of different bolts, which it might be necessary to tighten or undo. If you are smart enough, you can even end up with some knowledge on how to effectively polish a brake cylinder.
But let me ask you one question: Are the above mentioned skills that you have mastered in as short period of time as two weeks adequate for qualifying as a motor mechanic? Have you had enough experience to consider yourself a competent specialist in the motor mechanics field? It goes without saying that the answer would be positively negative! We both realize that.
Before you can be considered competent enough to be able to claim a job position of a qualified motor mechanics you will have to learn much more things than you were able to learn during those two weeks. Any professional instructor in the trade of Motor Mechanic can explain to you that the knowledge of the purpose and how to use each tool of a standard motor mechanic tool kit is not yet enough. In the first place, each tool should be used correctly in various situations that can happen in the process of a car repair, which implies good knowledge of various motor vehicles. In the second place, the requirements of work environment dictate the twists and turns of different repair process and tools usage. Thirdly, you have to demonstrate that you are capable of maintaining new levels of performance in the process of actual repair work. If a person has successfully demonstrated the above-mentioned talents and skill, then this person is in position to be granted a motor mechanic qualification.
If we use another analogy to compare different trades, we can say that after learning the specific scientific names and functions of each of the tools used in surgery, and even having learnt how to use the tools, a person cannot be consider in position to conduct even the simplest surgery operation. The same would be true for the medical field of dentistry. Can you extract a tooth or fill in a cavity even if you know by heart how to use all possible dentistry tools, even the most modern of them? No, you cannot be considered a competent surgeon of a dentist, far from it! You should not be even let near the doctor's office. And the reason is the same.
The further it goes the stronger is the impression that I am getting that there is something wrong with sound understanding and implementation of this key principle of competency based and oriented thinking. The problem concerns the trade field of business improvement programs on the whole and can be applied to Lean Six Sigma Training programs in particular. Somehow and somewhen this distorting shift did actually happen. As far as the Lean Six Sigma Training programs are concerned we can see that at present time the overwhelming number of such programs is aggressively offered to prospective customers through mass media and especially on the Internet. The number of providers is outright confusing! The first impression which a person related to this trade area might get is that the Lean Six Sigma Training program has managed to become a highly trendy thing and every consulting company of any worthwhile significance and repute is doing its best not to waste the precious time and juts keep up with the latest fashions. Otherwise it is very difficult to understand and explain the offers to provide competent face-to-face Lean Six Sigma training during as long as six weeks and as little as five days with 100% present of your certification as a Black Belts specialist. How can that be achieved realistically? Personally I am at a complete loss!
In the first place, any Lean Six Sigma Training program which is worth mentioning should get the accreditation with pertinent regional or national educational authorities. Otherwise the certificate of a Black Belt or a Green Belt is not worth the paper it is printed on. Becoming a competent person is the same as learning a certain trade, it is impossible to be done in several weeks. For instance, in Australia the certification requirements of our Black Belt program in Lean Six Sigma Training had to answer the requirements of an Advanced Diploma qualification in order to get accreditation.
The truth is that basic understanding of Lean Six Sigma method and its essential tools does not actually require too much time. As far as this part of Lean Six Sigma is concerned it can be very well mastered through a small amount of online instruction in the key concepts (phlebotomy courses online) or a couple of days of face-to-face training. What is important is that the competency with the tools cannot be the primary intention, and that should be recognized by all. In this case a person ends up with some basic knowledge about how to use the tools, but that does not make a person a qualified practitioner. You cannot be considered a Black Belt or a Green Belt just through learning the tools!
What does a competence on the level of a Black or Green Belt implies? It implies deep understanding of the processes that are in progress at the very core of the business under consideration, it means a practitioner can understand and competently use exactly the right tools required at the relevant level of qualification and the current business processes. Such issues as competent and efficient working with a project team, the positive improvement of the project within the related challenges, data generation and analysis through expert usage of state-of-the-art statistical methods are in the field of competence of an actual Black Belt. In the modern dynamic environment full of real-life business challenges a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt expert demonstrates ability to produce the desired outcome through generation of creative solutions and building of sustainable commitment, which inevitably leads to positive changes in the pertinent business environment dynamics.
Without actual hands-on experience and training in the business environment under the question it is absolutely impossible to reach the above-mentioned level of competency. The Black Belt practitioner is going to deal with other people, so the knowledge of their professional environment is of paramount importance. Notwithstanding the pressures, dead-line constrains and stresses of day-to-day business, a Lean Six Sigma Training expert should be guaranteed to provide adequate coaching, mentoring and efficient application of the Lean Six Sigma Training tools and concepts.
Besides the genuine competency and the ability to achieve the results, there should not be any other objectives or goals of any efficient Lean Six Sigma Training program. As they say, it is a must! A trainee will have to demonstration the necessary level of competency before any certificates would be issued, this is the policy of all best providers of Lean Six Sigma Training programs nowadays, and you should better stay away from those with different opinion. Be cautious, the Internet is choke-full of Lean Six Sigma Training programs that proclaim excellent results in the shortest time possible. Make some careful research and make sure that the program of your choice really teaches its trainees how to be competent practitioners!
